A guy who has materialized the dream of Kenji Miyazawa；Mr. Haruo Obata.

　昨日の記事で宮沢賢治の詩を紹介しましたが、僕は子供の頃より宮沢賢治が大好きで彼は僕が最も尊敬する人でした。しかし、彼の有名な雨にも負けずの詩も、宮沢賢治にとってすら「そういうものに私はなりたい」という、ある意味夢であって、決して賢治自身そういう生き方を実際にしたわけではありませんでした。僕もずっとあれはある意味理想であって実際にあのような生き方を出来る人なんて、この世に居るわけもないとずっと思ってきました。
　しかし、もうちょっと前に成りますが一時期スーパーボランティアとしてマスコミを賑わした尾畠春夫さんという人は、正にあの宮沢賢治が理想とした生き方を身をもって生きている人で、5万5千円の年金だけで暮らし、殆どの時間を被災地での救援活動に費やしていて、誰にも頼らす、食事も４合の玄米なんて贅沢なほどで小さな車の中で寝泊まりして、自分の時間の殆どを救援活動に捧げておられます。こんな人が実際に実在するなんて信じられない気持ちだし、理想でしかあり得ないと思っていた宮沢賢治が夢見た生き方ってホントに出来るんだということ知って、僕は大いに衝撃をうけました。

　一時期のブームが去った今、敢えて、この尾畠春夫さんの偉業を書き残し世界にも知らしめるためにあえて今改めて取り上げたいと思いました。このはてなブログがどれだけ世界の人に見てもらえるかは分かりませんがハッシュタグをつけておけば意外と引っかかるかもしれないと思い、この尾畠春夫さんの偉業と、正にその姿を詩にしたような宮沢賢治のあの有名な「雨にも負けず」を英語で紹介したいと思います。これまでにも「雨にも負けず」の英訳はネット上にも出ているようですが、どれもちょっと肩に力が入り過ぎていて、賢治本来のさりげなさが損なわれているように思われましたので、今回は出来る限り自然体の賢治の姿勢が思い浮かぶように訳してみました。あと、最後に尾畠春夫さんののニュース記事も見つけたのでそこへのリンクも貼っておきます。

   A guy who has materialized the dream of Kenji Miyazawa；Mr. Haruo Obata.
   Mr. Haruo Obata (78 years old) is the most amazing person I ever encountered.
   From my childhood I’ve been admiring Kenji Miyazawa: one of the most famous Japanese poet, for his philosophy especially expressed in his posthumous work “AMENIMO MAKEZU” (Never discouraged by rain). Yet, even for Kenji Miyazawa himself, the life style expressed in his poem was just a dream which he could not really carry out.
   This man, Haruo Obata, however, is really living a life like as expressed in Kenji’s poem.
   I never thought such man can really exist nor the dream of Kenji can ever be implemented.
   For those who do not know the poem of Kenji Miyazawa, I translated his famous “AMENIMO MAKEZU” as below. You may find some other English translations on the internet, yet I tried to translate it as close as the original without adding any personal interpretation.

AMENIMO MAKEZU by Kenji Miyazawa
   Never discouraged by rain, nor by wind, nor by snow, nor by the heat of summer, having a strong body, without ambition, never be offended，always smile gently.
   Eating four bowls of brown rice with miso and some vegetables daily, never count oneself in anything, closely watch, listen carefully and try to understand and never forget.
   Living in a little thatched hut under the shade of pine wood in a meadow, if I hear there is a sick child in the east, go and nurse him/her. If I hear there is an exhausted mother in the west, go and shoulder her burden. If I hear there is someone dying in the south, go and try to relieve his/her fear. If I hear there is a quarrel or a lawsuit in the north, go and tell them not to waste your time any further.

   Facing a drought, shed tears together and at a damaged crop by the cold summer, walk around with concern.
   Called as a gawk, never praised nor disliked, I want to be such a person.
